Dave Roper found his passion for dance music after a visit to the UK, in 1987, during the heyday of British Acid House.
Already a fan of electronic-pop bands like Joy Division and New Order, Dave like so many others discovered the raw, fresh and new music called acid house and became a convert.
Upon his return to New Zealand, Dave became a regular Rave party goer and searcher of the music while friends and family back in the UK kept him in fresh supply of new Mix tapes.
Dave visited England again in 1990 and upon introduction to the sound of 'Hardcore Breakbeat' and 'Techno' was instantly in love once again.
While in the UK he amassed a nice collection of both genres and knew he wanted to play these tunes out to others in clubs. Dave's first breaks as a DJ came by way of both the Rebel Alliance crew and by Sample Gee & Sam Hill and D-Rave aka Dr Ave was born.
Along with 48 Sonic and Aaron, Dave was one of the first Dj's to play this english techno, hip-hop hybrid known as 'Jungle'. After playing various parties and seeing the wealth of up and coming new DJ's coupled with the lack of places to listen to Jungle, Dave decided, along with DJ/Promoter veteran
Andy Vann, to organise a pure jungle night, entitled 'Drum and
Basswise' which promoted talented DJ's such as DJ Riddle and Pots.
The vibe, atmosphere and music was so right that Drum and Basswise went all the way to series 6 and another successful series of 'full spectrum Jungle' events entitled 'Jungle Soundclash' followed.
With a passion for the sound of Jungle/Drum and Bass and the departure of partner Andy Vann, Dave searched for others to continue spreading the music and found Andy Pickering and DJ Omni to form Subtronix.
Subtronix brought over Grooverider for his second visit to our shores, Ed Rush for his first visit while also running a series of local parties.
Andy Pickering and Dean Benfell aka DJ Omni left to pursue other projects and it was at this time that DJ Presha arrived back in Auckland from Christchurch. After realising that they shared the dream to see Auckland and New Zealand's drum and bass scene reach world standards Presha became an equally vital part of the Subtronix we know of today. They amalgamated presha's Breaks into Subtronix and got to work on bringing the best in the International Drum and Bass scene to New Zealand and more recently the best New Zealand has to offer to the world.
